Training
Fees are charged on an
"annual" basis for most of our programs. For your
convenience, fees may be paid in 9 equal installments. A
post-dated cheque or payment must be provided for the first of each
month starting October 1 and ending June 1. Swimmers who move
training groups throughout the season must adjust their payment
accordingly. New swimmers can join at any time during
the season and the fees will be pro-rated. Some programs
for our younger swimmers are charged on a sessional
basis.

|
Participation
Points gives Island Swimming families
an opportunity to earn-back money on their account. This
program was first implemented during the 2006-2007 swim season and
has proved to be highly successful in rewarding families who
volunteer in the club. Those who meet their minimum
point requirements can receive a travel subsidy from their home
club and those who do extra and exceed their minimum points can
earn back additional financial credits to thier
account.

Meet
Hosting Commitment: Swim meets hosted
by any of our clubs offer the opportunity for our athletes to
compete at home. This allows for parents and
athletes to see the rewards of their training and in
some cases, to see the best swimmers in the country
compete. Swim meets raise considerable funds for our clubs
and also save our families the cost of traveling to meets. We
are fortunate to have one of the best pools in North America, and
Island Swimming is proud to host many swim meets each
year.
|
-
Meet
Support: For meets hosted by each of our clubs and
Island Swimming, each family in the competitive program is required
to volunteer for the number of sessions deemed necessary by the
meet organizers. Parents will sometimes be asked to help out
at large meets where their child may not
compete.
-
Swim
Meets: Most swim meets require hundreds of volunteer
hours. For example, A Sunday morning Olympic Way swim meet
requires 16 timers, 1 starter and 2 prize people. That is 19
volunteers for approximately 3 hours. A meet like the Island
Pacific Cup, in November, requires 32 timers, 2 starters, 2
referees, 18 stroke and turn officials, 12 office staff and 4
hostess volunteers for each session. Most of these meets have
6 sessions, requiring a total of approximately 420 volunteer shifts
for the meet.
-
Officials
training: Each official
from Timers to Meet Referee requries training and
certification. All competitive families are asked to complete
the Level 1 (Timer) training during their first
season, and to continue their officials training to the
highest level possible.
-
Billeting: Each family may be asked
to host an out of town swimmer at their home for one or two meets a
year. This a wonderful opportunity to meet swimmers from
other clubs and forge new friendships.
-
Volunteer
hours: Volunteer hours and Officials
training, look good on your resume. We also provide letters
to students who volunteer as part of there required volunteer hours
for school.
|
|
Team Travel
& Activities: Swimmers using
team travel or attending team functions may be provided with a cost
estimate prior to the event. Swimmers must deposit the
estimated amount to their family accounts BEFORE they can
attend. Families are responsible for keeping their account
current and up-to-date at all times.
|
|
Bingo: Each year COHO
and VASC receive funds from the Greater Victoria Bingo Association
through it’s affiliation with Playtime Bingo. In
return, COHO and VASC are required to supply volunteers to sit in
on 3 - 4 bingo sessions each calendar year. Families
with swimmers in the competitive program may be asked to sit at a
table for a couple of hours and hand out information about your
club.
|
|
Meet
Entry Deadlines/Fees: Swim meet
entries are due more than a week in advance of the meet date.
Swimmers who enter a swim meet are responsible for their own swim
meet fees. Swimmers who scratch from the meet after the entry
deadline will still be responsible for their meet fees. Host
clubs will only refund meet entry fees with a doctor’s
note.
|
|
Vacation/Illness
Policy: Group fees are based on an
annual program. Therefore, refunds will not be given for
vacation or illness. Refunds for extended illness (30 days or more)
will only be considered with a doctor’s note and the approval
of the General Manager.
|
|
Withdrawals and
Refunds: If your swimmer is
withdrawing from one of our clubs, please notify your coach
immediately and you must provide written notification (email is
preferred) to the General Manager. Your withdrawal will occur
at the end of the month of the day that the General Manager is
notified. Any outstanding family accounts must be paid in
full before any post-dated cheques are
destroyed.

Fundraising: Island
Swimming recognizes that today’s families are very busy and
very few have spare time to spend raising funds. However
to ensure that fees remain affordable, we do need to have
additional funds coming into the club. We have some very easy
ways to help out.
-
Hosting
Swim meets:This is explained above and is
our "main source" of fundraising and is a great way to watch
your child swim close-up as well as a fun way to make new friends
in the club. There is a job for everyone and volunteers
usually get fed during their shift.
-
Thrify’s Smile Cards
Program:In the fall, each club applies to be part of
the Thrifty’s Smile Card program. Each family is
encouraged to receive a Thrifty’s smile card from the program
co-ordinator and load your grocery money onto the card prior to
shopping. You pay the same amount for your grocercies as
always however, the club receives a credit % in the form of a
donation from Thrifty’s Foods.
-
Aquatics for
Arthritis:Swim BC and Island Swimming
have partnered with the Arthritis Society on this unique and worthy
cause. Each competitive swimmer is encouraged to raise a
minimum of $100 soliciting donations on behalf of the Arthritis
Society. Donations will be made
via a secure website in the name of your home club
and swimmer. Cheque and cash donations may also be made
payable to "The Arthritis Society". Top earners will be
eligible for prizes from each of the clubs. Each
donation of $25 or more will be eligible for a tax receipt
that is issued immediately from the website. Raising
money is as simple as sending an email to family and
friends.

Childrens Fitness Tax
Credit: Beginning in 2007, the
Government of Canada is allowing a non-refundable tax credit on
eligible amounts up to $500 paid by parents to register a child in
an eligible program of physical activity. The Island Swimming
programs are eligible activies and eligible fees will be noted on
your statements with a ** following the description. Please
keep a copy of your statements as your receipt for Revenue Canada
if needed.
A note from Swimming
Canada: "To be eligible for the
children’s fitness tax credit, the fees must be paid for a
child who is under 16 at any time in the year. The fees must
relate to the cost of registration or membership in an eligible
program of physical fitness activity. There will not
be a need to submit receipts when filing your tax return, but
you must keep them in case the Canada Revenue Agency asks for them
when verifying the claim. Receipts should be kept for six
years."
