Canada’s Ryan Cochrane wins second gold medal at Australian
championships

– Olympic and world
championship medallist Ryan
Cochrane of Victoria won the gold medal in the men’s
1,500-metre freestyle on Sunday to conclude the Victoria State
swimming championships.
Cochrane’s
victory was one of two Canadian medal performances on Sunday. Erica
Morningstar of Calgary added a silver in the women’s 200
individual medley.
In the men’s 1,500 freestyle, Cochrane grabbed the lead for
good at the 150-metre mark and sailed to victory in 15 minutes and
35.19 seconds. Shane Asbury of Australia was second in 15:52.29. It
was Cochrane’s
second victory of the meet. On Friday he placed first in the 400
freestyle.
Morningstar earned her first individual medal performance of the
weekend clocking 2:16.39 in the 200 IM. Alicia Coutts of Australia
was the winner in 2:13.40.
Kevyn Peterson and Breanna Hendricks, both of Calgary, were sixth
and seventh respectively in the women’s 200 freestyle while
Hanna Kubas and Katie Murdoch, also both from Calgary, were seventh
and eighth in the women’s 50 backstroke.
Morningstar, Murdoch, Hendriks and Peterson combined forces for
fourth place in the 4X100 freestyle relay.
Caitlin Nolan of Toronto (Etobicoke) was sixth in the
women’s 1,500 freestyle and Stefan Hirniak of Victoria
eighth in the men’s 100 butterfly.
