Due to some very impressive swimming from all
of our Island Swimming athletes, we are sitting in 2nd
place in the team standings after Day 2 of Summer Nationals, not
far behind the UBC Dolphins.
Island Swimming’s girl’s 4 x 200m
freestyle relay team (Alexa
Komarnycky, Cassie Morrice, Taylor Padington and Julia Wilkinson) set a new BC
Record with a time of 8:11.98. 19 year old Cassie Morrice and 16 year old
Taylor Padington had
their work cut out for them, teaming up with the likes of seasoned
Olympians, Komarnycky and Wilkinson. However, they both rose to
the occasion and churned out exceptional swims, each with a new
personal best.
Congratulations ladies.
Island Swimming’s men’s 4 x 200m
freestyle relay team (Stefan Hirniak, Blake Worsley,
Jeremy Bagshaw and Ryan Cochrane) took the
win with a time of 7:23.25, over 6 seconds faster than the second
place team from Australia.
Olympian, Ryan Cochrane missed the A final
from his preliminary swim in the 400 IM. However, his final time of
4:22.97 in the B final would have earned him a bronze medal. Additionally, this swim set
a new Island Swimming Club Record. The previous record goes back to
1990 and was held by Jon
Kelly who swam on the national team for nearly a decade and
specialized in IM and fly.
16 year old Alec Page also swam the 400 IM
in the B final and set a new Island Swimming Club Record for the
15-17 boys in the 400IM with his time of 4:29.29.
Island Swimming’s Julia Wilkinson, added 2 more
individual medals to her collection. She took gold in the
women’s 50 backstroke and bronze in the 100m
freestyle.
The pool competition continues through to
Sunday at the Saanich Commonwealth Pool.
